The Importance of Bees and How AI Can Help to Protect Them
Since I was a child in Brazil, I've been fascinated by bees, and I still dream, like a sort of modern Sherlock Holmes, of becoming a beekeeper when I retire. My retirement dream is to be a small-time beekeeper with a selected number of colonies of bees, rearing quality queens that can survive in our harsh environment while introducing the traits I would like to see in them on a pretty small scale. Over the last few years, I've been in contact with some passionate beekeepers, some that want to do it for a hobby, and some that want to do it for the experience for a long time; I've been exploring many hypotheses of applying technology, in particular, AI to enhance and protect beekeeping, helping them to survive our tough metropolitan environments. Fortunately, there has been a growing awareness about our pollinators and the risk they face from the pressures of human activity. In response, many researchers, farmers, and citizens are coming together to help protect these essential insects and their habitats.

Examples of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence, powered by deep-learning algorithms, is already in use in healthcare. Specifically, AI's imaging capabilities are promising for cancer identification and screening, including breast cancer. Artificial intelligence is also used to predict the development of diseases across a healthcare network. A group at Mount Sinai used deep learning-based AI algorithms to predict the development of diseases with 94% accuracy, including cancers of liver, rectum, and prostate. How Artificial Intelligence, IoT And Big Data Can Save The Bees
Modern agriculture depends on bees. In fact, our entire ecosystem, including the food we eat and the air we breathe, counts on pollinators. But the pollinator population is declining according to Sabiha Rumani Malik, the founder and executive president of The World Bee Project. But, in an intriguing collaboration with Oracle and by putting artificial intelligence, internet of things and big data to work on the problem, they hope to reverse the trend. Why is the global bee population in decline?

AI, IoT, and language of bees can save the world
In short, the Internet of Things, big data and Artificial Intelligence is being used to interpret the language of bees to gain a true understanding of biodiversity and environmental health. "We're starting to understand the characteristics of communication in the beehive," says John Abel, vice president of cloud and technology at Oracle for the UK, Ireland and Israel. "Already, we understand certain actions of the bee. For example, flying in a figure 8 is not random. Certain tones bees use will indicate food or water. The way the bee shudders and rotates within the figure 8 will indicate to the rest of the colony what it found and where it is. If the heat or sound in the hive changes, it can mean the hive is preparing to swarm. "If the queen bee is too large to fly – because when it is in the hive, its job is to create the future bees of the hive – the queen's workers have to prepare the queen for flying, and that takes 20 odd days.

Can listening to bees tell us why they are in decline?
Can artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning help save the world's bees? That's the hope of scientists who are scrambling to reverse the dramatic declines in bee populations. Bees are in trouble, but we're not quite sure why. It could be the overuse of insecticides; air pollution; warming temperatures; the varroa destructor mite; or even interference from electromagnetic radiation. Or it could be a combination of all these factors.
